The art of chainsaw wood carving is an art form that many artists are beginning to explore. It is a natural extension to their skills set and often includes a mixture of traditional carving techniques with modern designs. Crager, along with Tracie Dugas his wife, have been carving beautiful wood creations together since the 1960s. In between shows, they try to get home as much as possible to help out with painting and staining. His daughters help out with staining or painting occasionally. White pine is preferred by them as it is lighter and less susceptible to cracking.

Rich Anderson

Rich Anderson is a chainsaw woodcarver from Reedsport, Oregon. He is a Poughkeepsie local and lives there with his wife, and son. Anderson has several degrees in fine arts. He teaches art to Pre-K through fifth graders. Anderson has created many sculptures on Long Island, and even one in Colorado. His work includes sculptures of standing trees and smaller pieces such as corn ears. He is currently completing a sign design for Youngs Farm Riverhead.

He has created a huge cobra and great blue heron to help a Wading River mechanic.

The chainsaw wood carver, was among many artists who showed their work during Canada Day weekend in Sydney. While tourists were flooding Sydney's waterfront, locals had the chance to see the chainsaw artist while enjoying the short dry spell.

Tim Crager

Tim Crager did not consider himself an artist. His skills with a chainsaw were only averagely proficient. But his passion for carving led to a full-time occupation six years later. Crager sold more than $1million worth of carvings over the Eastern U.S. in his six-year career. Crager was born in Garrett, Eastern Kentucky. He grew up watching the chainsaw wood carver at his work. The artist's style captivated him, so one day he called his boss and put in his two-week notice.

Crager favors white pine over other wood types because it is easily accessible from tree trimming companies. But, there are many wood types that people prefer. Crager works with the grain of wood as a guide and let the saw do the rest. Crager may know exactly what he's making before he starts any project. However, he often changes his mind mid-project. While small projects can be completed in a matter of minutes, large carvings can take up to 33 to 35 hours.

Don Scoggins

Don Scoggins is an expert chainsaw and wooden carver. His wood carvings are detailed and often contain many animals. His works have been admired by neighbors and tourists alike. Blue Arrow Farm's entrance and coffee shop are adorned with chainsaw sculptures that are so detailed and large. Blue Arrow Farm is run by Don Oriolo. He is also the owner and manager of Felix the Cat. Kacie Oriolo, Don Oriolo’s husband, met while participating in a New Jersey State Fair competition for chainsaws.

How To

How can you accurately measure wood?

There are many methods for measuring wood. We use a digital scale (a tool for measuring distances), a laser-level (used to level your work surface), as well as a bubble level (used in order to level your work surface).

A digital caliper can have two jaws, which open and close. The first jaw holds the object, and the second measures the distance between them. Digital calipers are great for measuring small distances, such as thicknesses of wood.

Laser levels have an infrared light beam that projects a line across the floor. A red dot is created by the laser. It is possible to see if the surface of the surface are even by looking down at it. For large surfaces, laser levels are the best way to check their accuracy.

Bubble levels look similar to a compass. The device has a bubble at its center. As long as the bubble remains centered, the device can tell you if the surface has been leveled. Bubble levels are good for checking the accuracy of smaller areas.
